Ildikó V. Sprok Ferenc Móra's Donation of Books and Journals to the Somogyi Library in Szeged Ferenc Móra's Donation of Books and Journals to the Somogyi Library in Szeged 1917-1919 Part I 1917-1918 Ildikó V. Sprok In the volume entitled "Hundred Years of the Somogyi Library", published in 1984, one chapter discusses in detail through what sources the library enlarged its stock, including the list of the donated volumes, and the names of the donators themselves. It has not yet been known exactly which books and journals Ferenc Móra himself donated to the Somogyi Library. Ferenc Móra, being in the position of a director, was motivated to support the library. He was both a journalist and a representative of the "Palace of Culture", thus being at the same time responsible for the library as well. Móra became a journalist at the Szegedi Napló periodical in 1902, and from 1904 on he was employed as a librarian in both the Somogyi and the City Library. In 1917 he took over the position of director there from István Tömörkény. Due to the pour resources of the library, he, as a journalist and editor, was eager to use his personal contacts to enrich the stock of the library. The books he had received as review volumes or as complimentary copies he donated to the library. The institution constantly struggling with financial difficulties had to rely on this kind of personal generosity in order to enlarge its stock. The primary source document to provide data on Ferenc Móra’s donations is an old inventory from the year 1917. 548
