Ibolya Kerekes Bulrush Weaving Handicraft Cooperative in Tápé and its Changes in the 20th Century Bulrush Weaving Handicraft Cooperative in Tápé and its Changes in the 20th Century Ibolya Kerekes Several studies have discussed the 20th century history of bulrush weaving within the handicraft cooperative in Tápé. Fortunately enough, detailed descriptions from the period provide us with plenty of information on the exact process of bulrush processing, on the types of objects made in Tápé, as well as on the marketing of the products. These documents are precious especially in their presenting a by now disappeared world. Since after the change of regime in 1989-1990 bulrush processing was driven into the background, almost disappearing from the village of Tápé. However, in previous studies the fact that bulrush weaving domestic industry with its several century long tradition was integrated into a consciously constructed national network has been somewhat neglected. The building of the structure financed by considerable state support started in the second half of the 19th century, and functioned until the last decade of the 20th century. The change of regime, together with the end of state financing, resulted in the collapse of this network as well, destroying at the same time the ancient tradition of bulrush processing in Tápé. The study presents the processes which resulted in the flourishing and decaying of bulrush processing domestic industry in Tápé during the 20th century, at the same time revealing its role and significance in the community throughout the century. 474
