Craftsmen's Spending on Funerals in the First Half of the 20th Century

Funerals were considered as significant events in the life of each social stratum. Funerals as communal ceremonies expressed the position of the deceased in social hierarchy, at the same time showing their financial status. Present study aims at revealing the exact sums craftsmen spent on funerals in Szeged, by analysing 235 inventories of estate. The study of the period between 1900 and 1944 has provided significant aspects of comparison, in spite of

the fact that both the collection and analysis of data are impeded by the world war, the inflation and the change of currency in 1927.

The study throws light upon the differences between genders, and on how funeral customs changed between the two world wars. So far no studies have been published on this theme in Hungary, thus present paper may encourage further research.
