Zsolt Máté Unravelling the Cartographic System in the 1697 Cadastral Register of Palánk District in Szeged Untravelling the Cartographic System in the 1697 Cadastral Register of Palánk District in Szeged Zsolt Máté Szeged as a town situated in the central region of the Hungarian Kingdom was under Ottoman- Turkish rule almost for 150 years. 10 years following the liberation of the country in 1686, the fortified centre of the town - called Palánk - was burned down in 1697. The cadastral register established soon after the fire sheds light upon the social and settlement setup of the town. 30 years after publishing the German language register by Győző KENÉZ and Ferenc SZAKÁLY, the author of present study reveals the system of mapping of this important topographic dataset by unifying the means of engineering and philosophy in his paper. The difficulty of the cartographic system lies in the register containing several thousands of data on the inhabitants of this quarter without providing clear cartographic information. Present study provides data on the settlers of almost 500 plots, with the name and profession of their owners, together with the location of some public institutions, such as the Town Hal, pubs and prisons. 298
