RÉGÉSZET - Varga Sándor: Árpád-kori telepjelenségek az M43 autópálya 20. lelőhelyén
Sándor Varga Settlement Features from the Árpád Period Excavated in M43 Site Nr. 20 Settlement Features from the Árpád Period Excavated in M43 Site Nr. 20 Sándor Varga The preventive excavation of the Site Nr. 20 situated on both sides of the motorway leading to Hódmezővásárhely to the north of Makó was carried out due to the construction of the M43 highway connecting Makó and the Hungarian- Romanian border. In course of the three excavations taking place in 2008 and 2009, 168 features were registered on an area of 7013 m2 The finds were mostly Sarmatian objects, but besides them, in the southern region of the area a part of a settlement from the Medieval Árpád Period was found. In spite of the small number of the objects unearthed in the settlement originating from the Árpád Period, the finds show the typical range of objects usually found from this period. In the vicinity of a square-shaped pit house recessed in the ground, two stoves built in the open air, several ditches of different sizes (among them some used to keep animals in), pits of altering shapes and a skull was discovered. Most of the finds were pieces of pots and animal bones. The settlement part excavated in Site Nr. 20 is estimated to be dated to the 10-11th centuries, based on the decoration of the pottery and on the selection of rimming forms characteristic of the kettles unearthed. Also, the pit found near to the settlement part also seems to go back to the 11th (latest to the beginning of the 12th) century. Drawing on the high number of pens, animal bones and kettles found in the site it may be stated that animal husbandry played a significant role in the life of the population inhabited the area. Also, slag was found in the objects, marking the presence of a nearby smithery. 267
