and from the late Starcevo layer of the Obre tell 82 both attest the expansion of an early metallurgical technology. Copper finds were recovered from a depth of 9.5 m (Vinca A) and 7.5 m (Vinöa B t ) of the 10 m high settlement mound of Vinca near Belgrade during the excavations conducted at the beginning of the century by Basic; 83 these unusually early copper finds were, however, later "intentionally" disregarded by prehistoric research. Numerous copper objects have been reported from neighbouring countries which fall within the Vinca B 1 —B 2 period and are thus contemporary with the finds described in the foregoing; these are mainly ornaments and small artifacts.
