SZENT ISTVÁN KIRÁLY ES A PÉCSI ÓKERESZTÉNYEK JRGZM Jahrbuch Des RöMisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums (Mainz) FolArch Folia Archaeologica (Budapest) KEMMK A Komárom-Esztergom Megyei Múzeumok Közleményei (Tata) OLIVÉR GÁBOR KING SAINT STEPHEN AND EARLY CHRISTIANS OF PÉCS (Summary) Pécs Bishopric celebrated its millennial anniversary in 2009. That is to say, St. Stephen founded it in 1009. It is well-known that before that, already in the Early Christian times there was a bishopric in the town (Pécs / Sopianae). However, nor Carolingian church in the 9th— 10th centuries, neither Hungarian church in the 11th century considered itself to be the organic pursuer of the Early Christian antecedents. The study presents seven causes of this phenomenon that can be led back to the age of Saint Stephen, which are the following: 1) large time span; 2) oblivion of the Christian world; 3) difference between the Late Antique and Medieval church organisation; 4) difference between the Early Christian and Medieval religious comprehension 5) unified territorial program of the baptism and church system of the Hungarians in the 11th century; 6) program of the foundation of the national church in the 11th century; 7) Imitatio Romae in the 11th century.
