Bajkai Rozália: Research possibilities of a Late Avar settlement at the northern adge of the Great Hungarian Plain. Hajdúnánás-Mácsi-dűlő

BAJKAI ROZALIA can be well dated to the second half of the 8th-9th centuries. The dating was validated by a unique, small tinned bronze belt fitting with small extensions and ringed ending, which was found with a metal detector. Its technical design and analogies of the shape refer to the end of the Late Avar Period, in the 9th century. Beside the traditional examinations and comparative analysis of pottery, we made detailed observation of daub and plastering pieces that significantly supplemented our knowledge on the structure of the houses. They had clay walls, emerging above the surface, stiffened with wooden pillars and smaller branches. The examination of the plant prints on the inner surface of the baking bells will hopefully deliver us new information as well in the future. The finds coining to light, among them stone material (mill stones), 5 pieces of iron slag and bone implements (awls, scrapers) supported our suggestion on the self-sufficiency of the inhabitants. However, more detailed analysis and thus the discovery of the resources and communication system of this Late Avar Age settlement remains to be an interesting task of the future.
