Sz. Kürti Katalin: Munkácsy Mihály élete és kultusza (Békéscsaba. - Békéscsaba, Békés Megyei Múzeumok Igazgatósága, 2004)

The life and cult of Mihály Munkácsy. Resume

In 1995 there was a world premiere in the Déri Museum where „Ecce Homo" was exhibited together with the two „brothers" „Krisztus Pilátus előtt" and „Golgota". This trilogy has been visited by a lot of people. There are many books and albums published and films made on it. The exhibition „The life and cult of Munkácsy" was arranged in the Déri Museum, in 1994 there was also an international scientific conference with lecturers from France, Luxembourg, Romania and Hungary. The whole exhibition with the congress were transferred to the painter's birthplace Munkács in Ukraine. Many interesting books were published in Békéscsaba in the last decade. The Munkácsy-room, which was re-arranged in 2004, and the periodic exhibition „Munkácsy and photography" are also very popular. With these events the profession and the public celebrated the 160th anniversary of the painter's birth. The two organizers were the Munkácsy Museum and the Munkácsy Memorial House (Békéscsaba), the former Steiner-Omaszta mansion, which was the painter's favourite place of residence in his younger years. The two institutions of Békéscsaba, the Déri Museum and the town of Miskolc, which are also interested in the Munkácsy-cult, enjoy the generous support from the Hungarian National Gallery that is in the Budavári Palace today. In addition to a permanent exhibition on the art of Munkácsy and László Paál, the gallery arranges exhibitions on the Hungarian art in the 19th century (including Munkácsy) abroad. The most significant events were the Bonn and Paris commemorations in 1994 and a Luxembourg exhibition in 1996.
