Except for a few a species most of them are protected. Before the draining of marshes an unbelievable richness characterised the avifauna of the Southern Trans Tisza region: „Thousands of storks, cranes, geese and ducks lived in the wet meadows flooded by the Körös Rivers and River Berettyó. Even egretts were so numerous that in 1797 this county sent the 103 egrett feathers for the uniform of the National Guard to Wien. The internationally important birds of this region are: Common crane (Grus grus), Great Bustard (Otis tarda) and White stork (Ciconia alba). For commercial hunting thousands of Ringnecked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) are bred and reintroduced every year. The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is also a popular gamebird.
