Alkali woodland clearings On the higher elevations of the Great Hungarian Plains a mosaic like pattern of forest and steppe patches were common in the past. Nowadays it is one of the rarest plant associations, and the most important remaining Hungarian stands of various sizes are found right in the Trans Tisza Region. The protected area at Bélmegyer is a unique island of diversity in the surrounding monoculture dominated cultural landscape of the Great Hungarian Plain, and it still exhibits the former beauty and past speciesrichness of the original flora. Enormous, probably more than a century old trees guard the land: pedunculate oaks, tree-sized hawthorn bushes, dog-rose bushes and wild pears grow here and there. The forests growing on alkali soil are interspersed with clearings occupied by alkali woodland clearings (Peucedano-Asteretum punctati) meadows. Its characteristic plants are the Hog's Fennel /Peucedanum officinale/, which grows to a considerable size in the autumn, the Spotted Aster /Aster puctatus/ with its lilac flowers, and the Goldilocks Aster /Aster lynosiris/. Iris spuria is one of the protected and especially beautiful members of this plant association. One of the unique specialities of the Körös Region is the very rare and hence protected Sea Dock /Rumex pseudonatronatus/, found in the salty woodland clearings at Bélmegyer.
