There are more examples for churches erected at very early time in smaller settlements, destroyed only by the changes occurring in the settlement-system from time to time. The population, however, survived in the changed and permanently changing circumstances during the whole Middle Age. Mediaeval Churches in Békés County This continuity enables us to search for the mediaeval antecedents of the later ethnographic inheritance with archaeological methods. Thus elements, customs of the contemporary everyday-life cannot be discovered more thoroughly in other way than by the exploration of the ruined settlements and their sacred buildings, graveyards.
