There are more examples for churches erected at very early time in smaller settle­ments, destroyed only by the changes occur­ring in the settlement-system from time to time. The population, however, survived in the changed and permanently changing cir­cumstances during the whole Middle Age. Mediaeval Churches in Békés County This continuity enables us to search for the mediaeval antecedents of the later ethno­graphic inheritance with archaeological meth­ods. Thus elements, customs of the contem­porary everyday-life cannot be discovered more thoroughly in other way than by the ex­ploration of the ruined settlements and their sacred buildings, graveyards.
