Száz év műtárgyai a Munkácsy Mihály Múzeumban 1899-1999 (Békéscsaba, 1999)
Kocsor János: A Munkácsy Mihály Múzeum rövid története
AZ ÁLLAMOSÍTOTT MÚZEUM 1950 márciusától a múzeum történetében gyökeres változás következett be. Az intézmény irányítása kikerült a város fennhatósága alól, kiszakadt addigi közegéből, közvetlenül a Népművelési Minisztérium kezébe került. Az országosan egységes szabályozásnak köszönhetően ugyanakkor a szakmai kérdések (gyűjtés, leltározás) terén a következő években jelentős előrelépés történt. 1951-ben - előzetes ellenőrzést követően - a korábbi igazgatót felmentették, s helyére Lükő Gábor (1909- ) gyulai múzeumigazgató rövid ideig tartó megbízatása után Tábori Györgyöt (1913-1997), a múzeum első teljes állású alkalmazottját nevezték ki. Személyében szakképzett néprajzos került a múzeum élére. The three ethnographical exhibition arranged by László Linder and the Evangelic Female Association (1931, 1933, 1937) was of prominent significance among the periodical exhibitions. Beside them the exhibitions of the Aurora Circle (lasting 8-10 days) deserve attention. They prevailingly consisted of works of the local painters and industrial artists but sometimes they showed the bests of the Hungarian art. These were organised in addition to concerts, literary lectures, knowledge-disseminating lectures by the Association. Around the end of the Second World War, in September of 1944, on the approach of the front, according to a decree the most valuable materials of the museum should have been transported into a Franciscan monastery of Somogy county. However, this decree was not executed - on one hand because of the attack of the Soviet troops on 6 October, on the other hand because of the resistance of the colleagues. After 1945 the normal work was virtually interrupted for years. Since there was not nominated director of the museum, it was led by Árpád Sass, painter, from 1944 till 1946, and afterwards from 1948 till 1951. In October of 1944 the basement of the building was over-flown by water, and the ethnographical materials stored there got dilapidated. At an other time the ethnographical objects of the exhibition arranged in the theatre were disappeared. THE MUSEUM UNDER STATE CONTROL From March of 1950 radical changes occurred in the history of the museum: it was brought under state control. The authority of the city could not control any longer the institution, and it was taken over directly by the Ministry of People's Education, loosing the contact with its natural community. Owing to the country-widely uniform regulation, however, in some fields (collection, registration) significant progress was taken. In 1951 - following a supervision - the former director was dismissed, and following a short-time commission of Gábor Lükő (1909- ), museum director of Gyula, György Tábori (1913-1997) was nominated for the post, as the first full-time employee of the museum. He took the lead of the museum as professional ethnologist. He earned a degree in history and geography in Budapest and he listened to ethnographical lectures at István Györffy, and then he got a title of doctor. He earned a degree in history and geography in Budapest and he listened to ethnographical lectures at István Györffy. In the first half of the 1950s beside him a natural scientist (Béla Hankó, 1886-1959) as part-time worker, an art-historian (András Mucsi, 1929-1994) as full-time worker and in the second half of the decade an archaeologist (Júlia Kovalovszki, 1931- ) worked for several years. Although the personnel conditions were better than in the previous period, development in this field was modest in comparison with other museums. The budget was formed similarly: the operation was ensured on higher level than in all former periods but it was less than in case of other institutions with similar size and similar role (in 1950 it exceeded the 45,000 HUF, and it was more than 300,000 HUF by 1960). Owing to the more increased requirements of the city - which had become the seat of the county - and the increased duties of the museum to be fulfilled,, between 1950 and 1952, following the removal of the library as last step, the building stopped functioning as "house of public education". The removals released significant spaces for the museum. It was possible to separate the exhibitions and the depositories and to bring the materials up from the cellar. At the end of the decade, however, the museum stood in need of space again, and the question of extension emerged still at that time, which, however, remained only a plan still for long years. 12
