Horia Medeleanu: The lyricism of geometry (Fordította: Vizi Endre)

The lyricism of geometry Our trend István Orojan from Gyula came to expose at us from a nearby familiar area. His mentality has been formed on the vast lowland with a wide skyline. This is not the boundless and mystical steppe of Malevics. The lowland of Oroján is peaceful and protecting. The elements separated by the artist's soul can be found in our friend's painting. Following Mondrian's tradition István believes the rational order of reality and geometrical structures. But his geometry is not reserved and severe like that of the great master of the North. Our István was born on the East and he is nearer the above mentioned Malevics. Like Malevics even István Orojan believes: geometry can be demonstrated by emotional contents, it can be rendered perceptible. So geometry can be modified into pure lyric, the expressiveness of colours preserves the artist from the spectacular but simplifying decorativism. By spontaneous manifestation the very colours change into state of mind. In the pictures of István Orojan the .colours placed on separated superficies become light, translucent, elevating, they demonstrate human relations in a limited space. Opposite the dynamic and mystic Russian character of Malevics the lights of István Orojan's works suggest the feeling of happiness and reconciliation, the relation of human being to the world. Reason and intelligence are equal factors in creating this kind of painting combining the value of both West and East. This painting represents us living at the border of West and East. We keep a kind of a bridge in our soul. Orojan undoubtedly represents a kind of abstract art. He removed the figurative elements from his works immaterializing the view of world, he used geometrical forms to apprehend the intellectual essence inside the things. He apprehended the only perceptible thing of material world, colours, the spiritual colour transformed from objective to subjective nature. In this way he managed to express himself and all of us living in the intellectual and geographical dimensions. Allow me to emphasise again: István Orojan's art is a kind of BRIDGE. Half way form him to us and from us to him. This is the place where in the spirit of true friendship fraternal love can meet affection for people. 18
