High Days and Weekdays. Everyday Life of a Bourgeois Family in Gyula in the Horthy age- Zsolt Bódán - Resume A lot is known on the way of life and the culture of Horthy age aristocracy and peasants. However, concerning the everyday life of the middle-class including the rural bourgeoisie, this is less so. This paper intends to provide some additives to the topic. Based, primarily, on the recollections of Katalin Sztojanovics (b. 1920), the last direct line descendant alive of the family, and on the documents preserved in the bequest of the Ladies family in Gyula, the study presents the red-letter days and the everyday life of the Sztojanovicses, a respactable bourgeois family in Gyula in the interwar period. The first part of the essay summarizes the outlines of the history of the family, covering the ancestors’ occupational and economic conditions, which had founded their economic and social status in the interwar period, thus fundamentally defining their typical bourgeois way of life as well. Later on in the essay, the bourgeois way of life is discussed in detail. This includes first the presentation of the material culture (interior furnishing, household) then the conduct (schedule, social life, leisure, entertainment) and, finally, the issues of festive life (holidays of the calendar year, and turnings of a man’s life) have been presented.
