Bevezetés (Szakáll Sándor)

MINERALS OF THE ESZTRAMOS HILL (Preface) Sándor SZAKÁLL The Esztramos Hill situated between Tornaszentandrás and Bódvarákó villages has a high importance from several aspects (Fig. 1. 2. and 3.). The mining of rocks lasted for decades from the second half of the century. During the mining activity several caves was revealed and partially destroyed. The variety of minerals in the caves is matchless in Hungary. There is a large variety in the fossils from the clayey deposits of the caves examined by several authors. The Esztramos Hill also has an importance for its hydrological and speleological specialities. It has an old iron ore mine too, which worked for centuries. The botanical speciality is the flora on the top of the hill. After an outline of natural heritage protection and history of the region, review papers follow on speleology-hydrology, paleontology and mineralogy (Table I) of the locality. The geology of the local iron ore deposit and computer modelling of the relief of the hill complete the monography.
