Coal mining, which started in the last century at Dorog, Tokod, and Tatabánya and in this century in the 1930's at Várpalota and Oroszlány, has greatly declined and practically ceased. The coal mines near Bajna and Many - begun in the 1970's as part of the socalled "Eocene programme" - have shared the fate of these mines.
