WOOD AND STONE SEPARATELY AND TOGETHER (Something about the motifs of tombs of the Hungarians from Kalotaszeg) The geological characteristics of the landscape determines the folk culture in many ways. The monograph presents how material culture, specifically the traditional motifs associated with tombs, is related to the natural environment. Kalotaszeg is an ethnic clime in Transylvania, east from the Kings' Pass, in the Kalotaszeg Basin along the river Rapid-Körös. In the cemeteries of Kalotaszeg can be found motifs made from wood or stone. The Eocene limestone, which can be finely carved, is mined locally and provides the material for the tombs. In areas where woodland was more prevalent, the custom was for the erection of spear-shaped headstones made from wood which was used for a longer period. Later the wooden motifs were often replaced by stone and the design of the tombstones altered significantly throughout the centuries. [Translation by Emese Rabóczi-Warren Page] Attila Hevesi 551
