systematization of the peoples on linguistic evidence as part of an encompassing Universal History. J. Ch. Gatterer by classifying Völkerkunde to geography (Göttingen, 1975) opened a new way for interpreting knowledge of different peoples. A similar term, Volks-kunde was applied by J. le Franck van Berkhey in the Netherlands in 1776. F. Kollár introduced the term ethnologia in a book on the history of Hungary (Wien, 1783) with a definition similar to Schlözer's understanding of Ethnographie and Völkerkunde. Ethnologie was suggested with a different meaning by A-C. Chavannes (Lausanne, 1787) as part of a general anthropology. His ethnology aims at the description of human communities of the world and their elevation to various degrees of civilization. This was elaborated as an anthropological perspective without reference to Chavannes in Great Britain and in the United States in the second part of the 19th century. Kollár's interest in national composition and its history in Hungary had a predecessor, Mátyás Bél, in that country. He even used the term ethnica in a publication in 1718, but with a meaning current in the theologian literature, it referred to religions outside the civilized world.
