ÜVEGMŰVESSÉG - ÜVEGTÖRTÉNET - Perger Gyula: „7 Tockeyer Gläser... "Adatok a soproni polgárok üveghasználatához a 17-18. században

"7 Tockeyer Gläser" The use of glassware among the burghers of Sopron in the 1 7th— 18th centuries Even though few studies have been published on the use of glassware based on the documents and records housed in various archives, data on how this ware was used in Hungary's north-westerly regions is generally lacking in the available publications. This brief study focuses on the different types of glassware used by the burghers of Sopron during the 16th— 18th centuries, based on some five hundred inventories written in German. Although glassware is mentioned alongside silver and tin vessels in the earliest documents from the 15th century, their number is virtually negligible. Initially luxury items, glass cups and mugs with a tin lid became widely used artefacts by the 17th century. Glass flasks are also often listed in the inventories. Various glass vessels became commonly used artefacts in town households during the 18th century. A specialisation can also be noted, especially regarding the glassware used for serving and storing wine. Glass pictures and framing paintings under glass too became common, as did figurines covered with glass. Although glass variants of the most common vessels appear in the inventories by the late 18th century, their proportion remained below one-fourth of metal vessels. Gyula Perger 58
