Visitor friendly museums (Arad, 1913) Similarly to other European museums of the post-feudal age, Hungarian museums too struggled constantly with the lack of space. The single exception in the history of Hungarian public collections was the National Directorate of Museums and Libraries, which in the late 19th century and the first two decades of the early 20th century organised museum life on par with the period's European standards. Maintained and funded by the Ministry of Culture, the Directorate encouraged the growth of collections through new acquisitions, the professional organisation of exhibitions and the training of museum staff by providing the necessary funds. The Directorate's activity led to the constniction of new museum buildings and cultural centres in several towns of the Carpathian Basin. The Directorate's support was not restricted to preparing architectural plans and their professional review, proposals for furnishing the buildings and the publication of reference books on museum installations, for it also provided the necessary funds for the construction of the buildings. Between 1906 and 1913, the Directorate ensured the necessary funds for the construction of a cultural centre in the royal town of Arad (Romania). The town and the restauranteurs debated whether a license for a restaurant should be given in a building housing several museums. Asked for its view on the matter, the Directorate opined that "in addition to the many hours' long spiritual enjoyment, the public should also be provided with refreshment by food and drink." Today, at the dawn of the 21st century, many museums still struggle with the problem of the creating a visitor-friendly atmosphere. In addition to its many appealing exhibitions, visitors to the Hennán Ottó Museum of Miskolc can enjoy refreshments in the museum café in the museum's central building. Sándor Bodó 470
