Cooper guild certificates in the Herman Ottó Museum of Miskolc The Herman Ottó Museum of Miskolc has been most fortunate in acquiring some three dozen 19th century guild certificates of the coopers' guild, the document certifying that the apprentice had completed his three years long apprenticeship. These documents were stored in the chests of the coopers' guilds of Upper Hungary. The museum acquired these valuable and irreplaceable documents in the 1930s: they were received from several individuals on the testimony of the museum's acquisitions register. The documents originated from the paper litter destined for pulping by the Miskolc branch of the Hungarian Waste Handling Company. The surviving guild certificates issued in twelve coopers' guilds centres of north-eastern Hungary (here meant to denote the broader region, with areas lying both within and beyond the Trianon borders) are annotated and published together with an analysis of their iconography. Most of the certificates were issued in Miskolc (16); the other localities were the following: Abaújszántó (1). Bodrog-Keresztúr(3). Breznó (2), Eger(l), Jászó(l). Kassa (2), Mád (1), Selmec( 1), Tállya(6), Tarcal (1) and Ungvár (I ). The documents were issued between 1801 (Kassa) and 1869 (Tállya). The publication of the guild certificates is preceded by an overview of the history and activity of the coopers' guild associations of north-eastern Hungary and of their privileges and by-laws. The presentation of the documents is followed by text recited when the cooper apprentices receives their certificate and were freed, based on a document from 1836. Tibor Rémiás 151
