A miskolci Avas (összegezés angolul) (Dobrossy István)
town development was completed, the Avas got into a special state. Its northern part considered to be the „real Avas" in the history of the town - was the integral part of Miskolc. The western part of the hill was bounded by Diósgyőr and areas belonging to the iron-works, in the south the Avas was bordered by Hejőcsaba. For this reason when the idea of building up was brought up, it was necessary to create a new administration district prior to the commencement of construction works. In all probability the fact that the building up plan on the Avas hill was approved could be attributed to the „Big Miskolc" concept haunting for years. Owing to the attracting effect of the industrialization the increasing number of inhabitants required vigorous town development. Since a great demand for flats had to be satisfied, the town could not indulge in the luxury of leaving such a huge uninhabited and vacant area unused in the city centre. The building of the housing-estate was started in 1973, after 20 years of preparations. In the years of 1940 significant orcharding and viticulture could be found here, only with a few house facing to the Csabai street. The hillside was dotted with houses rather with garden cottages. The first stage of the housing estate was built on this area followed by the other stages. By the implementation of the housing-estate „a town in the town" has been created, that is an artificial formation with its advantages and disadvantages. The forming housingestate accelerated a process and reversed a relation of several centuries, based on the natural interaction of man and environment. The essays in the volume contemplating on this issue, among others, reveal the problems of the housing-estate approaching the question from several aspects. It may seem to be symbolic that one of the closing essays mentions the new public institution, the Secondary grammar school of Avas. A new generation has grown up on the Avas who may form their relation between their living place and environment in a more deliberate way with more luck. István Dobrossy
