FOREWORD The Herman Ottó Museum with the help of the Miskolc Academy Commission and the Borsod Iron Trust organized the first conference cn the history of manufactures in Miskolc on the 16th and 17th of October, 1989. Prior to the conference the Herman Ottó Museum published the first volume of the periodical called Manufactures in Hungary. It contained the studies written for the conference. The present volume is a supplement which contains the papers read at the conference. These papers are quite different from the published studies as they present new thoughts and problems. Among the papers there is a study which was left frcm the first volume and was not read at the conference either but because of its theme we thought it right to publish here. At the end of the volume the discussion is published fully. The final speech of the president while summarizing the conclusions both of the earlier volume of studies and of the conference determines the further tasks as well so its German and English version may arouse international interest.
