TIBOR VÁKÁR’S WORK IN MISKOLC Keywords: Tibor Vákár, socialist architecture, Great-Miskolc, Castle of Diósgyőr, Herman Ottó Museum, heritage preservation, National Theatre of Miskolc, Urban Planning Office Tibor Vákár was born in Gyergyószentmiklós (today: Gheorgheni, Romania) in 1908. He graduated in 1926 as an architect. Starting from 1939, he dealt with urban planning and then from 1950 he worked on the planning of heavy industrial towns which were to be developed in the countryside as well as making building plans for them as the chief planning manager of the Urban Planning Office. This is how he arrived to Miskolc, where he facilitated the maintenance of numerous monuments and historical buildings that defined the townscape. He prepared a recommendation regarding the heritage preservation work in Miskolc downtown and also founded the Miskolc monument and townscape team together with Guido Zsadányi, which was the first of its kind in Hungary. The documentation linked to his work in Miskolc is an outstanding and valuable material for the town. These documents represent a historical era that was created right during the first steps of the transformation changing Miskolc into Great- Miskolc. They preserve the memories of an era that has almost completely vanished by today. The study provides the list of these buildings and an overview of the history of the architecture of Miskolc, based on the photographs taken by Tibor Vákár which ended up in the collection of the Herman Ottó Museum.
