Palóczy László ábrázolásai... 405 ICONOGRAPHY OF LADISLAUS PALÓCZY, RANKING MEMBER OF REPRESENTATIVE PARLIAMENTARY SESSIONS, 1849/1861 Keywords: Palóczy László, Reform Era, Representativ Parliamentary sessions, 1861 Parliament; historical iconography Borsod county’s ex-officio county clerk Ladislaus (László) Palóczy came at the age of 43 as a delegate to the Hungarian Diet of Pressburg/Pozsony (Bratislava) in 1827. It was the first time that the reformist politician was portrayed and the etching of Ferdinand Lütgendorf representing Palóczy as a Hungarian nobleman was published in the album entitled Hungarian Pantheon. In the Reform Era of Hungary there were two lithographs depicting Palóczy as member of House of Representatives made by Faustin Herr (1840) and the renowned Viennese artist Franz Eybl (1843). The latter portrayal has been very realistic, hence it prefigured the later iconographic representation as well. Palóczy as ranking member of Representative Parliamentary Sessions in 1848/49 was hardly depicted, nothing but a caricature is known in which Palóczy appears in 1848. After the 1848/49’s revolution and war of independence the next National Assembly was summoned in 1861 and Ladislaus Palóczy as ranking member was died during the sessions. Then the grieving Parliament ordered a portrait on him from a portraitist of that time Rudolf (Rezső) Grimm, who mad two paintings in the same time one as a full-length depiction for the National Museum, and a smaller three-quarter length picture to the knees for the National Casino of Miskolc, Palóczy’s home town. A few years after his death the county authorities ordered a representative solemn portrait from one of the best Hungarian artists of the 19th century, Miklós Barabás, which painting became a part of the County Pantheon located in the County Hall. This huge portrait belongs recently to The Fine Arts Collection of the Herman Ottó Museum, Miskolc. [Translated by the author] Gyulai, Eva
