NIEPCEPOTYPES FROM BÓDVAVENDÉGI Keywords: József Veres, photo, Valley of Bódva, Torna county, Technical school of Kassa In 2012, the Ottó Herman Museum acquired a collection of 450 items, consisting mainly of niepcepotypes, a set of photos that had been awaiting its fate in boxes in the attic of a family home. In 2013, the collection was extended with six new items. The photographs were made in the 1920s and 1940s by József Veres, an engineer who studied in Brno (Czech Republic) and later worked as a teacher at the famous technical school of Kassa (Kosice, Slovakia) for more than four decades. Besides his native village, Bódvavendégi (Host’ovce, Slovakia) he took pictures at surrounding villages and towns along the river Bódva, and at his excursions to Moravia, Romania and to other places. His subjects include historical buildings and sites in the towns he visited, however, he was also interested in new, ongoing constructions, such as of the market hall of Brno. He captured holidays and busy everyday life of people in the countryside. He also made commercial photos, such as portraits, pictures of children, of families, of wedding and Christmas celebrations, and of Catholic churches and schools of the region. As an unexpected result of the travelling exhibition of the photos, new niepcepotypes were brought to our attention that may be attributable to József Veres. However, further research is neccesary to verify their authenticity. [Translated by Ágnes Drosztmér] Bodnár, Mónika
