THE BANDERIA OF ABAÚJ AND BORSOD COUNTIES AT THE HOLY CROWN’S PROTECTION, 1790 Keywords: Abaúj county, Borsod county7, Holy Crown of Hungary, Buda Casle, bandérium, military flag A century ago, the administration of Borsod County7 deposited an embroidered military flag depicting the Madonna as Patroness of Hungary with St. Stephen King of Hungary and Borsod County’s coat of arms at the local museum, the predecessor of Ottó Herman Museum, Miskolc. According to tradition, this flag was borne to Buda Castle by the bandérium of Borsod County in May of 1780, when the Holy Crown of Hungary returned to Buda Castle from Vienna. The protection of the Holy Crown was organized among the Hungarian noblemen by Count Ladislaus Orczy, lord lieutenant of Abaúj County, who asked also the nobility7 of Borsod County' to participate in guarde ceremony of the Crown, and the county’s authority set up a bandérium, i. e. a cavalry battalion. On 9th of May 1790,25 knight riders in uniform left Miskolc, the chair city7 of Borsod County' to Buda Castle, and on the way a similar cavalry battalion from Kaschau (Kassa/ Kosice) joined them. The Banderia of Borsod and Abaúj Counties decided to fulfill their duties together at Buda Castle, and they served on watch of the Holy Crown together between 21th and 30th of May 1790 in the Sigismund Chapel of Buda Castle. In a contemporary print published in Pest by a Piarist teacher and theologian student Franz Rosenbacher, who addressed a long poem to the unified banderia of Abaúj and Borsod, and he also lauded poet and literary man Ferenc Kazinczy as the knight of Abaúj’s bandérium. The guard of the Royal Crown was abolished by the new long, Leopold II of Hapsburg in 1790, and the nobilities’ banderia were forced to pay back the costs for the domestic fund of the counties. Having returned from Buda Castle, the bandérium of Borsod County refused to pa}7 back the expenses, even from the remaining amount, the county authority' had a new flag prepared instead of the old and tattered one and it was kept in the County' Hall till the early 20th century when the “new” flag made in 1791 moved to the museum’s collection.
