the farm economies, and the new options and imperatives of mobility after World War 1, which contributed to the dissolution of the hierarchy between generations within families and the necessity of remaining together, and also led to a greater emphasis on individualising aims. A separate section is devoted to illustrating possible correlations between settlement patterns, plot types in different regions and environments, and the structural changes in households in different areas of Hungary. A different perspective is employed in the final section, which presents the life of three families. The main sources are family recollections and memoirs, whereby it is possible to illustrate individual attitudes to and perceptions of family roles, interactions and values, as well as shifting identities. The main conclusion drawn in the study is that the existing concepts of family and household are unsuitable for a description of the colourful activities and that the seemingly similar morphological types may conceal differing demographic behaviours, cultural and reproductive patterns and strategies.
