NOTES ON THE VERTEBRATE FAUNA OF NORTH-EASTERN HUNGARY I LAMPREYS (PETROMYZONTIFORMES), FISHES (PISCES), AMPHIBIANS (AMPHIBIA) AND REPTILES (REPTILIA) Discussed in this study are the vertebrates (Vertebrata), and specifically the lampreys (Petromyzontiformes), íishes (Pisces), amphibians (Amphibia) and reptiles (Reptilia), which were identified during the mapping of the insect fauna of various north-eastern Hungárián regions. The insect fauna studies were conducted in the Abaúj and Zemplén regions (where we chose several hundred sampling locations), with smaller surveys in other areas of County Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, as well as in County Nógrád and in the Szabolcs and Bereg areas of the northern part of the Great Hungárián Plain. Owing to the nature of the research project, vertebrate fauna was not collected with the aim of museum conservation; only field observations were made in most cases. We alsó collected the available zoological data concerning the Abaúj and Zemplén regions on the species identified during the survey, which are briefly quoted in the description on the habitat and distribution of each species. In contrastto amphibians and reptiles, there is a wealth of information on various fish species in scholarly journals and fishing magazines. One important study in this field is Kornél Chyzer's monograph on the fishes of County Zemplén published in 1882, in which he lists thirty-nine species. One of the most recent studies on the fish species of Hungary discussing the distribution of various species is the book by Ákos Harka and Zoltán Sallai published in 2004. They mention fifty-nine fish and lamprey species from the Abaúj and Zemplén region discussed here. Not one single overview of the amphibians and reptiles inhabiting this region has yet been published. Mihály Endes' study written in 1994 contains few accurate data. The aim of this study was to contribute to our knowledge of the fauna of north-eastern Hungary. Published here are the field observations on forty-nine vertebrate species: one lamprey, twenty-one fish, sixteen amphibian and eleven reptile species. Gábor Hegyessy 521
