MILLS IN THE BODROGKÖZ REGION Bread wheat has been grown for centuries in the micro-region lying in north-eastern Hungary and the south-eastern corner of Slovakia. Written sources mention the mills where the wheat was ground from 1214 on. The documents have survived in the archives of the Premonstratensian priory in Lelesz, the region's locus credibilis. The documents are currently housed in the Slovakian National Archives in Pozsony. In addition to the water mills on the Tice and Latorca rivers, mills driven by power sources other than water appeared from the 15th century. These two basic types of mills remained in use until the spread of steam engines in the 19th century. The first steam driven mills are shown near Bácska, Királyhelmec and Kisrozvágy on the maps drawn after the 1875 military survey. A county register from 1881 mentions the windmill in Kistárkány. 496
