Miskolc THE TRIALS AND TR1BULATIONS OF AN EXHIBITION ORGANISER AT THE DAWN OF THE 20TH CENTURY Bertalan Balogh and the 1906 travelling exhibition of Upper Hungary The travelling exhibitions of Upper Hungary (1906-1907, 1910-1911) were outstanding cultural events not only in Miskolc, but throughout north-eastern Hungary. They occupy a special place in the art history annals of Eger, Miskolc, Kassa, Eperjes, Sátoraljaújhely, Debrecen, Gyöngyös, the towns which offered venues for these exhibitions. This study examines the first travelling exhibition on the occasion of its lOOth anniversary, offering a glimpse intő how it was organised through an overview of the surviving documents. My aim was not a description of the event itself, but rather a portrayal of the preparations for this unique event, as well as of the problems and the tasks which had to be solved in order to make this brilliant initiative come true. The main purpose of the exhibition was to invigorate the árts and artistic life beyond the country's capital. The idea for the exhibition was conceived by Bertalan Balogh (1870-1922), a railway official in Miskolc, who had enthusiastically participated in the town's cultural life from 1898. He remained the spihtus rector of the initiative. He was preoccupied with the idea of the exhibition for many years before actually came out with his initiative. He visited Hungárián exhibitions and made study trips to Munich and Paris in order to familiárisé himself with how modern exhibitions were organised and to gain a knowledge of the necessary administrative background. In 1905, he submitted a carefully elaborated plán to the Hungárián institution competent in these matters.
