THE MÓRÉ FAMILY This study is part of a longer series on certain landowning families of County Borsod. This study and the later ones will focus on families, whose ancestry can be traced to the Middle Ages and were not ennobled during the mass ennoblement of the 16th-17th centuries. The Móré family came from southern Hungary, from where they fled owing to the Turkish advance. They settled in County Abaúj and County Borsod. Elek Móré was the castellan of Diósgyőr Castle and he administered the castle's estates in the early 16th century. He can be credited with piacing the family's finances on a firm basis. The family's estates lay around Mezőcsát and Szendrő. One prominent member of the family was István Móré, castellan of Ónod Castle and deputy ispán of County Borsod, who lived in the early 17th century. A separate section is devoted to István Móré, castellan of Szendrő Castle, who was active in the 1630s and 1640, and fought several battles in the Thirty Years War. He battled against György Rákóczi I in Gömör and Borsod counties. As castellan of Szendrő Castle, he was greatly concerned with the renovation of the castle. He is one of the family's few members, of whom a portrait has survived (a painting made by Elias Wideman in 1645). He died childless and the family's subsequent history until the close of the 17th century can be traced along the female line. István Móré's will is published in the Appendix. This document contains many fascinating details on his relatives and friends, and alsó allows a glimpse intő his financial standing.
