17. Szalay Lajos Csabai Kálmánnak Az itteni posta-sztrájk miatt lehet, hogy már Te sem kaptad meg a levelemet, de én mindenesetre nem kaptam Tőled semmit. Egy-két címet és protokoll adatot kértem. Hát nem baj, ha nem is tudok mindenkinek írni, akinek szerettem volna, ezen már nem borul fel a világ. Kedves Kálmán Remélem, jól vagy, és (mint rendesen) sokat dolgozol. Remélem azt is, hogy a műterem, ami fűtésből most fog levizsgázni, nem fog cserbenhagyni Benneteket, és végre úgy kezdhetsz napi munkádhoz, ahogy kell; pihenten és nem lihegve a szénhordástól. Mi ezt a rohadt és egyre feketébb New Yorkot nem bírjuk megszokni. Csak azért tűrjük továbbra is, mert itt él a lányom, és itt élnek az unokák. Ez sokért kárpótol bennünket. De azért a nosztalgia Európa után és leginkább Magyarország után nagyon gyötör engem is, Jucit is. Egyébként - hál' Istennek -jól vagyunk. Remclgetjük, hogy egészségünk még kibírja a hátralévő 20-30 évet. Még egyszer; boldog új évet, jó munkát, és jó egészséget. Ágit üdvözöljük Szeretettel üdvözlünk Juci és Lajos FROM THE CORRESPONDENCE OF THE PAINTER KÁLMÁN CSABAI Lajos Szalay (1909-1995) and Kálmán Csabai first met at the artists' colony in Miskolc and, later, at the Academy of Árts. In addition to the mutual fascination with each other's work, another strong link between them was Ágost Benkhard, with whom they had studied both in Miskolc and at the Academy, whose personality and creative spirit, as well as the liberal atmosphere of his classes, greatly inspired his students. Csabai recorded all that he had experienced at the artists' colony in Miskolc, where they had spent time together („A művésztelep története [History of the artists' colony]", Művészet 1873/12, 6-7). After graduating from the Academy, Kálmán Csabai settled in Miskolc, where he taught art for many decades and devoted much of his energy to public education. His exhibited works were chiefly still lives and landscapes. When the artists' colony was founded in Miskolc, he could influence the town administration in how the colony should be organised and who should be invited. Beside the many shared experiences of their youth, this was another strong link between Csabai and Szalay, who by the early 1970s had hoped to repatriate to Hungary and settle in Miskolc (because his parents lived there); however, he only arrived in 1988 owing to his overcautiousness and doubts. The letters from their correspondence preserved by Kálmán Csabai's widow allow a glimpse intő the nature of the relationship between them and Szalay's life, and they are alsó a record of his spirited and, sometimes, harsh judgements. The other letters addressed to Csabai by Béla Kondor (1931-1972) and Károly Majthényi (1914-1980) add new hűes to Csabai's pleasant personality, his unaffected manners, and his collegiality to his fellow artists.
