68 KOMÁROMY JÓZSEF AN ACCOUNT OF THE EXCAVATION IN THE NORTH-WESTERN TOWER OF DIÓSGYŐR CASTLE The State Board of Art Memorials has been carrying out restauration and conservation in Diósgyőr Castle (Miskolc, III Borough) since 1954. The author accompliched the first archeological excavation in the rondella of the Castle in 1958—59. He gave a report of this work in the former III. Volume of the Annual. Now the author gives an account of his second archeological digging he had made in the North-Western tower of the quadrengular castle on the Board's authority. During the excavation he entirely unearthed the walling of the tower built upon rock-surface, examined the layers filled up to the height of the entrance-doorstep on the ground-floor. From the archeological finds it could be proved that this castle with a square ground-plan and four corner-towers had been built by the king's order under the reign of Louis I. in the second half of the XIV century and there was no track of the said castle in connection with the former castle existing in the XIII. century. Namely this track appears on other parts of the castle. It seems that the castle from the XIII century with a ground-plan out of proportion did not extend to the excavated area or the line of the ground-plan avoided this territory. It can be proved by the crockremains coming to light at the excavations that the ceramics of the Árpád-period figuring in the Hungarian archeological literature continues to live in the XIV century and appears with the finer ceramics used in the reign of Anjou-kings. The very same thing occured at the excavations at Buda and Visegrád Castles too. The author, on the basis of excavation-find and by the comparison of contemporary documents sets the period of the castle built by Louis I. between 1343 and 1370. Its architect was Master Ambrose according to a document found in Eperjes (Presov). J. Komáromy JEGYZET 1. A szerzőtől а НОМ.
