Kamody Miklós: Indul a postakocsi (Borsodi Kismonográfiák 35. Miskolc, 1990)

SUMMARY The aim of the study is to introduce the two hundred year old history of the post office in Miskolc, which is one of the biggest rural post offices. This introduction will be made based on documents of the archives of County Borsod and the records of the general meetings of the county and the town. The first and second chapters deal, partly, with the past, presenting the scope of authority, the activity of the Governor Council Department, and the social and economic situation of the town Miskolc, further with the fight for keeping the privileges of the town. With the introduction of the town council the book shows the atmosphere of the 18. century, the every day problems of the council, it's contact with the royal chamber, and with the local organization of it, with the leadership of the Diósgyőr domain. A separate part of the study shows the financial situation of the town, which was not a rich one, but in spite of that, there was a demand to expand the postal services. It demonstrates the efforts of the town leadership in the interest of renting the domain again. In the last decades of the 18. century Miskolc had not his own post station, the mail was distributed by the post offices of the towns Eger and Kassa. The memories of that connection are shown in the study from 1695. The freedom fight led by Rákóczi broke the connection with the two postal areas. In spite of not having a permanent post in Miskolc, the first main postmaster, János Szepesi originating from there; and the ruling prince was several times in the town. The postal service was maintained by general and proportionate sharing in taxation, paid by the villeins and noblemen, until Josef the 2nd issued his order to establish the Kassa-Eger postal line. The third part of the study deals in details with the correspondence of the County Borsod and the Council of Governor about the opening of the postal station in Miskolc. The establishment of the postal station was hindered by the complains sent to the ruler, with that the activity of the post was hindered and the situation of the postmen was deteriorated. The most significant complain among them was that against baron Ferenc Antal Dory, the Treasury dominial attorney, who let to beat the coachman of the diligence of Tokaj in 1783. Because of the denunciation and his undermining of authority Dőry was against the institution of post until that time. From the summer of 1790 there were continuous measures that the postal line should be led through Miskolc and not through ónod, further on that a suitable person should be suggested for being the postmaster. Instead of the suggested persons the Council of Governor trusted László Bakos lower noble in Miskolc to lead the postal station, who was a cavalry sergeant for twenty years and was demobilized with injuries. The county didn't like the idea that he was nominated to that place and his activity was hindered always when it was possible. The Council of Governor decided that the opening ceremony of the postal station should be held on the 1st of September 1790 and the county 174
