. In 1964 miners were accomodated already in two hostels for labourers in rooms with 2—4 beds and three meals a day were ensured. A swimming-pool was constructed at Somsálybánya in 1935 where entry was permitted only for office-holders during a certain part of opening hours, this time even the buffet was open. In the first decade one fifth of inhabitants had mother tongue anything but Hungarian. The majority of the inhabitants of Somsálybánya was Slovaks. From one family four or five children attended school, thus merely the half of youngs of schooling age could learn. After starting up of mines at Somsálybánya (1921) and the relating settlement, the number of inhabitants of mine camp increased over 1.100. It was 1.300 in 1979. A so-called "aid-box" existed at the mine-head from the beginning and converted to a resource of partners, and the members were devided into two groups, one of them was engaged in fellow-cash-service, while the other one in sick fund. Contribution of members belonging to group 1 paid 4 per cent, while the latter one 2 per cent of their salary. Insurance contribution of employer was voluntary till 1907. The mine-head employed one factory medical consultant. Supply of goods for labourers was concentrated. At the same time when the colony was erected, provision stores, butcher's stall and canteen were built. Beside foods, household goods and wearing apparel were sold as well. In the thirties the miners were already provided with working-clothes. The first Miners' Trade Union was established in Borsod County on 17th March 1918. The book of rules enumerated 41 penal offenses from fine up to lockout. One of the most serious armed encounter ensued between the workers and military authorities on 9th April 1918, the event with two dead and lots of injured persons became known under name "volley at Somsály". Separate council was elected at Somsálybánya from Hódoscsépány on the 22nd March 1919, for president József Kral, besides three members for executive committee and nine members for the council were elected. Workers' Council was founded at the mining works, József Tarjani, miner was elected for president. Local authorities of proletarian dictatorship were abolished on the 5th August, the Red Guard on the 8th August.
