An Interieurfrom the Ormánság Region
Upstairs in our exhibition a reconstruction of the interieur of a house from the Ormánság region can be seen, recalling the turn of the century. Every room of the footed, frame house had an own door opening to the pitvar (porch). There is a stack-shaped oven in the kitchen. People cooked in front of the oven, on glowing embers that were pulled out. Smoke flowed out through the opening above the door or the open door itself. The copper stew-pot hanging on a chain above the fire is a characteristic sight. Embers were pulled out of the stove with a kurugla, the pot was put on a three-legged iron stand. The tűzikutya ('firedog', a kind of spitrack) is a device forged of iron, through the teeth and holes of which spits are passed to roast bread, bacon or meat. The most important instruments of the kitchen, the earthen pot, the strainer, waterjugs, vinegar pitcher, the salt-holder, copper baking trays are placed next to the walls. Larder with a storage tank called dudu, part of the exhibition The stove decorated with glazed tiles (szemeskályha) in the room is ornamented with flowers and birds, it is the work of village potters. Clothes taken off were put on a rod fixed on the ceiling above the stove. Smaller children slept in the corner behind the stove, on a wooden seat. 80
