Costumes
Group of German nationality in festive garments, Palotabozsok. 1923, unknown photographer half of the 19 t h century a more luxurious kind of clothing came into use and home-made pieces were replaced by more decorative manufactured goods. Fashion was set by the wellto-do villages of the Hegyalja region, where 'people wear the latest fashion. It is not uncommon that our handsome Hungarians appear in a bowler hat, in pretty gentlemens's clothes, in stiffened collar and shirt-front. Elderly women insist on the old black or dark blue dress, middle aged or younger women and girls follow the latest fashion and they practise an amazing luxury. So far it was practised to the advantage of velvet and silk, now the most fashionable fabrics are used, they have their dresses made from fashion magazines from Paris. Hat, collar and gloves are obligatory accessories of wealthy Hungarian women in the Danube region.' (Antal Várady) Giving up old costumes thoroughly, the naturalization of bourgeoise taste may be regarded as complete at the turn of the century. It is impossible to give a thorough picture of German costumes on these few pages. In Baranya Germans have a different wear almost from village to village, many times with significant divergences. It may be traced back to the fact that immigrating Germans arrived from different parts of the home-country, and they preserved the basic characteristics of the costumes brought with them despite that they could not avoid the impact of current fashion, too. 59
