Costumes

Reformed Hungarian couple in festive wear from Zengővárkony. Before 1896, photograph by Károly Zelesny was curled in a knot that was covered with a white headdress embroidered with coloured woollen yarn. Later the headdress was made of paper roses, and was decorated with small metal crescents and stars. On the back it had a big, rigid bow covering the neck, too. They wore a shawl as well, which had a red base at the young, under this a stiffened white shawl was worn. The headdresses of mourners and of widows were made of white lace, with white and blue ornaments. They wore many ample underskirts, the upper silk skirt had a hem, through which a string was threaded, and could be drawn together to the wished size. Upper skirts were made of extremely beautiful silk, but under the apron a cheaper material was used here as well. The material of the aprons was beautiful patterned silk of various kinds, their frame was the much liked black lace similar to that of the shawl. Like the skirt, the apron was drawn together by the hem when putting it on. Their jacket had a short waist, was made of white lambskin with a lot of red leather appliqués or embroideries, with a black lambskin edge. The neck was low-cut. Among all the womens' wears in Baranya one of the most colourful costumes is that of the Sárköz people from the foot of the Zengő.
