Begovácz Rózsa – Burján István – Vándor Andrea: Folk Art in Baranya County (Pécs, 2008)
Interieurs, Furniture
Folk furniture has a significant place in the material culture of the county. Houses were furnished with home-made furniture or furniture made by craftsmen until the turn of the century. During the 19 , h century rooms were furnished along determined rules. Entering the room from the kitchen the oven stood in the corner, the two sides of which towards the room were shaped as seats. The side along the longitudinal wall was called sut, it was used for keeping various things on it. In the winter it was the children's favourite place. The living-room part of the room was placed diagonally to the oven with a bench in the corner, and the table with two chairs. Opposite, on the other side of the window stood the high-stacked bed with at least two chairs in front of it, with their backs to the bed. Ethnographical literature usually calls this kind of furnishing angular or diagonal system. To the South and the West from the VillánySiklós range, in Bőköz, we can find a different, so-called parallel arrangement. As the name shows, two beds stood in the corners on the side towards the street, the table stood between them with a bench under the windows, and chairs on the far side of the table. The chests were lined along the two vacant longitudinal walls. This traditional system of furnishing gradually decomposed in the Ormánság between the two wars.
