Tanulmányok - Kárpáti Gábor: A kereszténység és államiság Baranyában

The creation of Hungary's first university in 1367 was of great significance. At the time three other colleges operated; at the cathedral chapter house, the cloisters of preachers and at the Augustine cloisters. Pécs was not a county seat, most assemblies being held at Baranyavár, Nagyfalu (near Siklós), Nagyváty and Meszes. They were made up of members of the county's most prominent families, whose names can be found imprinted upon national history. The Ováris, Hédervárs and Herceg families in the 13th -14th centuries, and the Maróthy and Horváthy families, the Garas and Matucsins in the 14th-15th centuries all had influential voices in national affairs. Turkish incursions into Baranya began in the first years of the 15th century. Pécs itself and the better part of the county fell to the Turks after the Battle of Mohács, in 1543. Final destruction and an end to organized statehood came with the valiant last stand at the fall of Szigetvár.
