Restoration of 16-17th century pieces of furniture in Janus Pannonius Museum Miklós Fertői The 16-17th century renaissance furniture (altogether 15 pieces) possessed by the Fine and Applied Arts Department of Janus Pannonius Museum Pecs, were restored in 2011, as part of the renovation of the Siklós Castle. The origin of the furniture is unknown; they were probably transferred to the collection from different manor houses in the region. They are high quality woodworker creations, proving the excellent drawing skills and technological knowledge of their makers. “Fundamental features of renaissance furniture are: clear shape, pure structure and pronounced application of architectural forms.” (Kaesz 1972: 96.) Restoration of credenza and chairs: The pieces of furniture were first disinfected with chemicals, followed by their structural reinforcement (gluing, repairing mortise and tenon joints), surface cleaning (using chemicals and by sanding), and puttying. Broken off or missing parts were replaced (from wood or resin). The objects were then treated with preserving chemicals that have both extinguishing and preventive effects on harmful organisms. In order to improve the solidity of the furniture, they were saturated with special wood structure reinforcing agents. Colouring was done using light walnut stain. To give them a silky shine, they were treated with natural oil primer and were then waxed and rub polished.
