Regional science program of Janus Pannonius Museum (Pécs, Hungary) for twenty five years Ákos UHERKOVICH The bulky volume "The Fauna of the Dráva Region, П." including 509 pages, as ninth volume of the periodical "Dunántúli Dolgozatok Természettudományi Sorozat" (Studia Pannonica Series Natural History) was published not long ago. This book is pointing to a considerable stage of an important team effort: systematical study of protected areas or areas worthy for protecion has started just 25 years ago by the organization of the Natural History Department of Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs. These researches tightened up several "white spots", unexplored regions in wievpoint of fauna anf flora. Earlier the fauna was almost unknown in the most parts of this region of South Transdanubia (Pannónia), also our botanical knowledge was also rather incomplete. In the beginning our studies were going on the Bares Juniper Woodland, later a landscape protection area, then the Zselic Downs Landscape Protection Area and the Eastern Mecsek Landscape Protection Area. Especially surroundings of Bares was studied exhaustively, from this earlier practically unknown area a very rich plant and animal world was revealed by a team of the best specialists. Janus Pannonius Museum published the results of these studies in four volume of collected papers (1978, 1981, 1983, 1985). After closing these works the fauna, flora and vegetation of the Béda-Karapancsa Landscape Protection Area was researched by the team, the results were also published in a volume (1992). The planned and meanwhile declared Duna-Dráva National Park (which includes Bares Juniper Woodland LPA and Béda-Karapancsa LP A) has been also examined since 1992. During this time mostly the Dráva Region was investigated, first for six years. The results were also published in two volumes of collected papers (1995, 1998). During the previous 25 years the staff of almost all important Hungarian zoological and botanical institutions joined in the common examinations. The participants were the specialists mostly of museums and natural history departments of universities. Altogether 77 colleagues helped us during this time, simultaneously 10 to 25 ones. List of colleagues, their scientific field and citation of most important papers are given in the Table 1. Almost all of them delivered manuscripts to publish in the volumes of Dunántúli Dolgozatok (Studia Pannonica) or in the Yearbook of Janus Pannonius Museum, the list of these papers are given, also the volumes of collected papers mentioned above. During these researches many species proved to be new for the Hungarian fauna, some of them for the biosphere. The number of listed animal species reached almost five thousands, also very various flora and vegetation was got to know in these regions.
