Természettudományok - Nógrádi, Sára–Uherkovich, Ákos: On the caddisfly fauna of the Kőszeg Mountains, Hungary (Trichoptera)
ON THE CADDISFLY FAUNA OF THE KŐSZEG MOUNTAINS, HUNGARY (TRICHOPTERA) Sára U. NÓGRÁDI and Ákos UHERKOVICH Abstract. 88 Trichoptera species were collected on 12 sites of the mountains. Three species proved to be new for the Hungarian fauna (Hydropsyche siltalai Dbhler, Plectrocnemia geniculata McL. and Adicella balcanica Bots, et Novak. Comments are made on the rare and characteristic species. Introduction The Kőszeg Mountains are the westernmost mountains of Hungary. It is the easternmost part of the Alps. The Austrian-Hungarian frontier divides it into two halves. The highest point, írott-kő (Geschreibenstein), 882 m high, lies on the border. Crystalline stones and slate form the largest mass of the mountains. It is covered by unbroken forests: mountainous beech, hornbeam-oak forests and pinebeech stands. This is the most rainy area of Hungary: the annual precipitation reaches 1000 mm on the average. Thus, the stream network of the mountains is dense and aboundant in water. The upper branches of these streams are not polluted. The first Trichoptera data of Kőszeg are those of Mocsáry (1900), who reported the occurrence of Grammotaulius nitidus Müll. The first summary and some further data to the west Hungarian caddisfly fauna were given by Újhelyi (1981a, 1981b, 1981c, 1982). Later, two papers of Nógrádi (1985, 1986) recorded some species which proved to be new (Ptilocolepus granulatus Pict., Philopotamus ludificatus McL.) or rare for the Hungarian fauna. Method, material, collecting sites 1. Light-trapping. In Chernel's Arboretum of Kőszeg a light trap has functioned in the years of 1983-85. Since this light trap was erected far from waters, not too many caddisflies were captured: 1506 specimens of 53 species (see also Table 1). Occasionally we used a portable light trap in Velem. During these nights about a dozen of species was captured. 2. Collectings on lamp. In the environs of Velem and Kőszeg we collected caddisflies by 125 Watt (sometimes 250 Watt) mercury vapour lamp powered by a portable Honda generator. This method was not too effective, altought some species have been captured only by this way. Some material was collected by Dr. M. Nyíró, too. He has handed over his material for us to examine and publish. 3. Sweeping. It was a very effective method along the small streams of the Kőszeg Mountains. 418 males and 156 females of 29 species were swept on 9 days along the stream "Hármas-patak" (Table 2.). All collecting sites were in the area of the Kőszeg Mountains. Around the town Kőszeg we collected along small streams ("Hármas-patak", "Stájer-házak", "Hörmann-forrás" and at an unnamed small brook.) Only once we have collected by lamp aling the ditch "Malom-árok" within the town. The laight trap functioned in the Chernel's Arboretum. Around the village Velem we collected also along small streams ("Borha-forrás", "Hosszúvölgy", "Szent Vid-patak"), sometimes within the inhabited area of the village. Near the villages Cák and Bozsok we caught specimens along also small streams. All collecting siets are situated in the XN14 quadrate of the international UTM grid map, excepting Kőszeg: ditch "Malom-árok", which is in the XN15 quadrate. Table 3 lists all the species and the sites. List of material In this section the whole material collected in the Kőszeg Mountains is presented with all data. In most case the name of the collector is not indicated (because the collectors are identical with the authors). Abbreviations of collectors: MNy =- Dr. M. Nyírő, N — Dr. Sára U. Nógrádi, U =- Dr. Á. Uherkovich. The material is deposited in the collection of Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs and Savaria Museum, Szombathely. Rhyacophilidae Rhyacophila dorsalis Curtis, 1834 - Velem: July 4, 1986 1 c?
