ALICE SZ. BURGER Fig. 38. Plan of room I The systematically laid brick hypocaust pillars came to light following the removal of an excessive quantity of burnt bricky-chalky debris (Figs. 38—39). In this room the 20X20X7 cm bricks had been placed on the 28X28X7 cm bricks lying on the flooring. The distance between the rows was 20—25 cm. These brick columns supported the „suspended floor". Heating pipe Fpl had been fashioned on the W wall of the room (W6) — (Figs. 40—42.J. Since no breach had been made in the lower section of the opposite E wall (Wl) for Fp, the circulation of warm air was accomplished through a pipe built into the lower section of partition wall W5 (Fig. 38). The bricks of the wall Fig. 39. Section С - С: room I 0 Fig. 40. Room I (Fpl) heating pipe (tubes) were found in situ in the NE corner: dimensions 28 X 17 cm (Fig. 43). Walls W 1 - W4 had been erected simultaneously, and the same applies to walls W6 and W4. Evidence of this was furnished by the small-sized trial trenches dug at the intersection of the walls. A layer of glaring white mortar could also be discerned at the intersection of walls W6 — W4 at a depth of — 100 cm. Measured from the top of wall W4, it covered the stone wall till the depth of — 40 cm. It could be traced till the depth of — 70 cm, where the wall was intersected by wall W6. The continuation towards the E of this earlier, massive stone wall has been revealed by the 120 cm wide trial trench. This wide stone wall dating from the earliest period (I. period) and the walls annexed to it have repeatedly been found in the course of subsequent excavations under the present-day stone walls (Wla, W19a, W40a).
