While registering the ground-plan of room F we came to the conclusion that the distance between the founda­tion and the present-day top of wall W31, the N termina­tion of the room, was 70 cm. Plastered to the rather poorly founded wall were the remnants of a number of hypocaust pillars (Fig. 18—19.). The full length of wall W31 or the positive presence of a sill piece could not be ascertained owing to the thick dilapidation layer. The burnt black spot in the middle of the block has yielded valuable finds. In the W half of the block we managed to get down as far as 80 cm. From below the bad quality white, chalky flooring extending over this area quite a number of early-period objects and animal bones could be rescued.
