Ditches Ny/I —4 Prompted by the mosaic fragments found in the area, we dug four small-sized trial trenches (with excavator) at right angles to the present-day outer wall (W19) of the villa. Our aim was to find out whether there were additional buildings towards the W. The archaeological material and the fresco fragments found at a depth of a few centimetres soon prevented the further use of the excavators. Since the systematic excavation of the area was hampered by these conditions, the existence of an earlier wing or other secondary structures in the area towards the W, in the direction of the stream, could not be established, although the phenomena observed primarily along block XVII seemed to support this assumption. — However, we have to add that the finds made outside the walls may also have got there from the inner rooms (S, V, R?) during earlier excavations (with bulldozer).
