I-II. (Budapest, 1896). Cremation-grave of the Roman period from Pécs KÁROLY SONKOLY An urn-grave was found in the course of our rescue-excavation conducted in Pécs (Sallai str. 24.). The urn which was covered with a flat stone contained calcinated human bones inside. It was found at a depth of 1,60 m from the surface. The gravegoods, a one-handled jug, a bronze buckle and a bronze coin (badly burnt, not determinable) were found among the remains of the funeral pyre. Judging from the urn and the bronze buckle the grave can be assigned to the fourth century A. D. This is the first cremation (bustum) grave from the Late Roman period which has been found in the Pécs area. Although the funerary rite and the gravegoods perhaps indicate the arrival of a new ethnic group, we would hesitate in stressing this point since the evidence is too scanty so far.
