Summaries LOCAL HISTORY CSÁSZÁRTÖLTÉS VOL. 1-2. pp. 353-354- BOOK REVIEW (Erika Wicker) The book by Miklós Bánáti entitled 'Twenty-two decades in the new homeland: The historical gazeteer of Császártöltés 1744-1964' was published in 1969. In 2015 the local municipal council decided that a new series would be published about the history of the settlement, but not in the form of a monograph, but as a series of publications including essays, data-sets reviews, focusing on various historical periods and aspects. Császártöltés Vol. 1, The history of the Császártöltés boundary from prehistory till the foundation of the village (edited by Erika Wicker, 152 pages, 2015). The first volume of the series includes a thematic collection of essays focusing on the area preceding the foundation of the village, based on environmental, archaeological and archival sources; the two minor papers taken over from the earlier monograph published in 1969 are included to colour the content of the volume rather than based on their scientific value. Császártöltés Vol. 2, The history of Császártöltés between 1918-1948 (edited by István Knipl, 288 pages, 2016). Beside the main theme of the volume focusing on the history of the settlement between 1918-1948, a new addition to the volume is the chapter entitled "Mosaic" including minor reports connected to the main theme of the book. The third volume of the series will be published in 2018, and will be presented later. ZOLTÁN FEHÉR: THE SETTLEMENT AND pp. 355-356 VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE OF BÁTYA - BOOK REVIEW (Zsuzsanna Bereznai) The book on the settlement and vernacular architecture of the Rascian-Croatians living in Bátya is a significant milestone in the life-work of the prominent local historian and ethnographer, Zoltán Fehér. Bátya is located in the Kalocsa-Sárköz region. The introductory chapter of the volume acquaints the reader with the environmental circumstances of the area, the connections between the landscape and the people living there, and the ecological factors effecting social networks. Then, the essay describes the particular and characteristic feature of the village: the "society of red paprika" in the period between 1918-1939 (Agricultural and industrial workers, day-labourers; producers; finishers; traders, including large-scale and small retailers; millers). The processing of paprika once was connected to ship-mills and water-mills, the history of these sites were also explored by the author. The description of the vernacular architecture of Bátya begins with the house as a cultic space, then the narrative goes on to the ground plan arrangement and the explanation of the various parts and elements of the house, including the furniture. Then, the historical roots of the arrangement of the inner plot is explained, with a detailed listing of the buildings located in the inner yard. The ethnographical review is supplemented with numerous photographs taken from the 1950s till today and a series of drawings. 367
